A metro system, also known as a subway or underground railway, is a high-capacity public transportation network of electric trains running on fixed tracks, often underground in urban areas, designed to efficiently move large numbers of passengers within cities and their suburbs.
It is the lifeblood of many European cities, providing essential public transportation to millions daily. This map highlights the spread of metro networks across Europe, from the iconic 🇬🇧 London Underground— the world’s first metro system, opened in 1863— to other systems in cities like 🇹🇷 Istanbul, which bridges Europe and Asia.
The last metro system to be inaugurated in Europe was in 🇬🇷 Thessaloniki, which began operating on November 30, 2024.
📝 Note: Some Russian systems are missing; part of Asian Türkiye has been included.
