Historical Lineage and Direct Inspiration
Many national flags exist because of direct historical ties or shared regional symbolism. One of the most clever examples is the Liberian Connection. Visually, if you take the United States flag and subtract 49 stars (using the single-star field of Somalia as a mathematical unit), you are left with the flag of Liberia. This isn't a coincidence; Liberia was founded by the American Colonization Society in the 19th century as a settlement for freed African-American slaves, and its flag’s 11 stripes represent the signatories of its Declaration of Independence.

These colors originated from Ethiopia, a symbol of resistance against colonization, and were adopted by nations like Togo to signal continental solidarity.
A more complex "addition" can be seen in the Seychelles. Its flag, adopted in 1996, appears to be a combination of Romania’s blue, yellow, and red with Hungary’s red, white, and green. Geometric Wit and Clever Subtractions
Some of the most intriguing equations rely on pure abstraction. Consider the subtraction of the green field: if you take the flag of Bangladesh and subtract the solid green field that represented Libya between 1977 and 2011, you are left with a single red disc. When placed on a white canvas, this results in the flag of Japan.
Finally, we see the technique of counter-changing in the flag of Greenland. By combining the horizontal bisection of Poland with the circular element of Japan, Greenland’s design creates a striking visual contrast.
